Pick a song,

I'll press the numbers

Choose something everyone knows

as you did after we built our first home

when we shared stories and names

and voices as a familiar chorus came

Then, choose an upbeat melody, sing a parody

to ease the air a little more

and invite the shy ones at the door

In time, the list will be filled with go-to selections

Like that serenade for your long-distance lover,

or that anthem from a musical we managed to sound decent,

those fan favorites I managed to spoil,

or those classic medleys we took turns with,

that ballad for your parents,

those car radio and Bluetooth speaker beats we danced onto,

or that boyband song we turned into a duet,

and old tunes from childhood shows we couldn't quite forget.

Before we turn off the screen, pick one last song

Something with a dreamy undertone

Something you haven't sung to us before,

and something you might not sing to us for a while

The lyrics don't even need to say goodbye

Pick a song,

the first one your mind conjures

I'll press the numbers
