Wrong cards played, wrong sacrifices

for someone who'd bring your game to ashes.

You once thought she'd only kindle the wick of the lamp;

And boy, were you wrong,

naive and ignorant

for thinking juvenile passion is something that'd last.

Alas!

You lost the gamble, rookie

to a veteran of the game.

Patience and focus weren't the key at all

Nor words

nor promises

nor similarities and differences

nor the chips on the table

nor the sentiment and its label.

So, what is?

Beats me.

I'm just a kid from nowhere

who's played hearts and never won.

And 'til I do, eyes are true, love is gone.
